Donggung Palace and Wolji Pond at night is widely regarded as the most breathtaking evening experience in all of Gyeongju β and one of the most romantic after-dark destinations in Korea. Known to older generations by its former name Anapji Pond (μμμ§), this illuminated palace complex transforms completely after sunset, when golden light reflects perfectly across the still surface of the pond to create a mirror image that looks almost too beautiful to be real.
If you’re spending an evening in Gyeongju and wondering where to go after dark, the answer is almost always here.
ποΈ 2026 Update: Following the successful 2025 APEC Summit in Gyeongju, the city has enhanced its multilingual signage and pedestrian pathways throughout the historic center, making the walk between Donggung Palace, Cheomseongdae Observatory, and Woljeonggyo Bridge even more convenient for international travelers.
What Is Donggung Palace and Wolji Pond?
Donggung Palace (λκΆ) was a secondary palace of the Silla Kingdom, built during the reign of King Munmu in the 7th century. It served as the residence of the Crown Prince and as a venue for royal banquets and the reception of distinguished foreign guests.
Wolji Pond (μμ§) β meaning “Moon Pond” β is the large artificial lake that sits in front of the palace complex. During the Joseon Dynasty the site fell into disuse and came to be called “Anapji” (Duck and Geese Pond). It wasn’t until 1980, when major excavation work uncovered thousands of Silla artifacts from the pond’s floor, that the site’s true historical significance was fully appreciated. Today, following careful restoration, it carries its original name: Donggung and Wolji.
Why Visit at Night?
While Donggung and Wolji is worth visiting during the day, the night experience is in a completely different league.
Once the sun sets and the illumination system activates, the palace buildings are bathed in warm golden light that reflects off the surface of the pond β especially on calm, still evenings when the water is undisturbed. Walking along the pond’s perimeter with the illuminated pavilions mirrored beneath your feet is one of the most atmospheric experiences Gyeongju offers.
It’s no surprise that visitors who explore the site by day frequently return after dark to see it completely transformed.

π ΏοΈ Parking Tips β Read This Before You Drive
The dedicated car park at Donggung and Wolji fills up very quickly in the evening. On weekends and during peak seasons, the queue can stretch back far enough that you’ll spend more time in traffic than actually at the site.
Local Parking Tip: If the main car park is full, drive directly to the Gyeongju National Museum car park β approximately 5 minutes on foot from the pond. The museum closes in the evening, meaning its car park is often available precisely when the night crowd arrives at Wolji Pond. This is the go-to strategy for locals and experienced visitors.
On busy weekends, consider parking further away and walking β central Gyeongju is compact and very walkable at night.
Best Photo Spots
The entire perimeter of Wolji Pond is essentially one continuous photo opportunity, but a few positions stand out:
West bank β The most classic view, looking east toward the main palace buildings with the full reflection in the foreground. This is the definitive Gyeongju night shot.
North corner β A slightly different angle capturing the curve of the shoreline alongside the illuminated pavilions. Less crowded than the west bank.
Full circuit walk β The perimeter path is approximately 1km. Walking the full loop reveals a different composition from every angle β allow 30β40 minutes for a relaxed circuit.
πΈ Photo Tip: The best reflection shots happen on calm, windless evenings when the water surface is completely still. Arriving around 30 minutes after sunset gives you the optimal balance of ambient sky light and artificial illumination.
